How to make a balloon animal

Here's how to make a simple balloon animal. Don't worry if you break a lot of balloons. It's part of the learning process. I still break balloons, but not as many as when I was just starting. - Thom

     Use only good quality balloons. ("245's" or "260's.") Cheap balloons break easily, leaving you frustrated.

     Stretch the balloon before inflating it. This reduces breakage and also makes the balloon easier to inflate.
     Blow up the balloon, but leave the last few inches uninflated. As you make the balloon sculpture, you will push air into this uninflected portion. (How much you leave uninflated varies from animal to animal and also from balloon twister to balloon twister.)
     You might want to use a pump.

Tie the balloon. Here is one way of doing this.

Work from the knotted end of the balloon.
Pinch the balloon a few inches from the knot, then twist a few times. Repeat this two times, so that you have three small "bubbles."

Twist the bottom of the first bubble to the bottom of the third bubble to make a snout (or nose, or muzzle) and two ears.

Make a small bubble for the neck, then two more bubbles. Twist together to form the neck and front legs.

Make a long bubble for the body and two bubbles for the hind legs. Twist together. The rest of the balloon forms the tail.

By varying the size of the bubbles, you can make a variety of animals.
